The data helps locate and identify physicians to vendors for business and other purposes.

This UPIN system was replaced by the NPI or National Provider Identifier numbering system way back in 2007 by the health services department of the United States but a UPIN lookup can still be done either in directories or online. One such place is the HME data website which allows a visitor to do a UPIN Lookup for free. The user can do the search by the last name, the first name or the state of the concerned physician. Also if he knows the UPIN he can lookup for the details of the physician. HME data is a company that stores bills and purchase documents of al physicians who transact with the government insurance company Medicare. It also provides an NPI number lookup service.

Another place is the Ecare website which offers a similar UPIN lookup function as HME DATA to registered users. The search criteria are similar to HME data and also include search by speciality or ZIP code. Ecare is also a company which helps doctors and other people in the healthcare profession organise their bills and other relevant paperwork with the aid of relevant tools.

There is also a directory of UPIN numbers available which has listed all those physicians who practiced before 2007. This is so because the directory is not published any more, however older versions are still available which used to be published by the health and human services department.
